In too many parts of the developed world light pollution around big cities means it is no longer possible to enjoy the simple earthly pleasure of looking up to the universe and seeing the stars at night.

The Yorkshire Dales has now received international designation as a Dark Sky Reserve, this means that there are very strict rules around street lighting at night to minimise any artificial light pollution giving you (when weather permits) stellar views of the night sky.
Every February through to the beginning of March the Yorkshire Dales Dark Sky Festival takes place, this is a highly innovative festival that lets everybody experience the wonders of astronomy and to learn from the best experts who visit Yorkshire to take part in the festival.

If you come from a large urban area, you may not have seen a truly dark sky, it’s a simple but amazing thing that gives everything in this life a little more perspective.
